My schedule didn’t allow me to be at San Diego this week, but I am informed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The High Country received the 2023 Scribe Award for Best Tie-In Novel — Speculative Fiction from the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers. I was clearly NOT expecting this, as it’s my third in a row in this category, after the previous Trek novels Die Standing and Rogue Elements (and my fourth overall, including Kenobi).
I want to thank the organization and the judges, and definitely also the wonderful authors I was honored to be nominated with this year, Christie Golden, Carrie Harris, David Mack, and Anthony Reynolds. Check out their works — you’ll be glad you did! The full list of nominees and recipients is here.
And I’d like to thank everyone involved with The High Country, including editors Ed Schlesinger and Margaret Clark and the team at Gallery Books. Thanks, once again, to STRANGE NEW WORLDS co-executive producer Kirsten Beyer for inviting me onto the project and working with me on what was a very complicated—but, I hope, rewarding story. Thanks, as always, to Dayton Ward and copy editor Scott Pearson — and also to John Van Citters and everyone at Paramount for making it all happen.
Special thanks this time to Paramount and Gallery for helping make the maps in the book happen — and to game designer James Mishler for his mapmaking guidance. And I deeply appreciate the input from my technical advisors on the book, Don Lincoln, Beth Kinnane, Michael Wong, and my son, John Miller.
Again, I’m blown away. It was a challenging write, but a story I really wanted to tell — and I’m delighted it’s found an audience.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The High Country
The first official Strange New Worlds novel!
An all-new Star Trek adventure—the first novel based on the thrilling Paramount+ TV series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds!
When an experimental shuttlecraft fails, Captain Christopher Pike suspects a mechanical malfunction—only to discover the very principles on which Starfleet bases its technology have simply stopped functioning. He and his crewmates are forced to abandon ship in a dangerous maneuver that scatters their party across the strangest new world they’ve ever encountered.
First Officer Una finds herself fighting to survive an untamed wilderness where dangers lurk at every turn. Young cadet Nyota Uhura struggles in a volcanic wasteland where things are not as they seem. Science Officer Spock is missing altogether. And Pike gets the chance to fulfill a childhood dream: to live the life of a cowboy in a world where the tools of the 23rd century are of no use.
Yet even in the saddle, Pike is still very much a starship captain, with all the responsibilities that entails. Setting out to find his crewmates, he encounters a surprising face from his past—and discovers that one people’s utopia might be someone else’s purgatory. He must lead an exodus—or risk a calamity of galactic proportions that even the Starship Enterprise is powerless to stop…
Releases Feb. 21, 2023 in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook!
